To evaluate the experiences and expectations of mothers who were breastfeeding when they gave birth at a tertiary medical centre. A pilot study was carried out among the first 100 women who gave birth at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. For the period of the first week of motherhood, a semistructured interview was carried out in a quiet room. The information obtained was subsequently analysed using a qualitative methodology based on the grounded theory approach. The mothers found breastfeeding to be the easiest mode of feeding for their babies; however, the health professionals expected them to struggle with breastfeeding. Having a baby was also described as 'being in a shock'. The mothers talked about their experiences of being tired and stressed, of having a 'crunchy feeling' in their stomach, of having pain and of their babies being cold and sweaty. The findings revealed that the mothers desired to breastfeed, but most did not expect to feel satisfied and were unprepared to make the effort. Health professionals should be trained to recognise the feelings that new mothers experience and to advise them that breastfeeding is one of the easiest forms of feeding and that they will eventually be able to develop a satisfying relationship with their babies.function [dF, dB] = b_coord(F, B, priors)
